Requirements

Up Schedule Requirements

Grades will be based on an average of the assignments
(90% of grade) The final exam
(10% of grade) Class participation  (ie. Questions and participation in class, Case Study Discussion and Case Study assignments via Web-CT, Lesson Plan development within group on Web-CT).

The assignments will be graded as follows:
25% Group Fingerprint Science Lesson Plan
25% Group Microscopy or Separation Science Lesson Plan
50% Final Exam

Graduate Students are required to prepare a group 30 minute presentation to the class outlining a lesson plan to teach a science topic to 9-12 graders (topics will be other than the assignments).

The lesson plan will include:

A lecture

A laboratory design (complete with supplies and equipment list)

A web resource module

Each member of the group is required to present 1 topic (lecture, lab, web-based).  The presentation will also be submitted in written form as a (minimum 10 page) paper or as a stand-alone web page (extra credit will be given for web page submissions).

Graduate students are also required to individually construct and submit a “chemistry resources for teaching” web page that will be critiqued by all other students in the class for a grade (this grade will be an average of the student grades).

Graduate student grades will be based on:

(80% of grade) the average of the assignments, and the final exam

(10% of the grade) the critiques of their web page and the critiques of the lesson plan presentations

(10% of grade) and class participation (see above)

The topic of the presentation/paper must be approved by the instructor prior to Week 4.  The final written paper is due on Week 5 otherwise, it is LATE.

Class Group Projects: There will be 3 graduate students and 3 undergraduate students in each class group. The tasks of the groups are to construct the best lesson plans for the 1) Fingerprint Science lesson and 2) either the Microscopy or Separation Science lesson. Presentations by undergraduates on 6/10 for a group will earn all group members extra credit.

Finally, if all students in a group receive an 82/100 or better on the final exam, all members of the group will earn 3 extra points on their final exam grade.
