| The
National Science Foundation (NSF) funds research and education
in biology
and the sciences through grants, contracts and cooperative agreements.
The Foundation accounts for about 20 percent of federal support to
academic institutions for basic research. Click

The
EPA awards
fellowships to individual students or recent graduates for environmental
study. The award consists of a stipend and tuition costs depending
on the individual. Potential funding per Fellow per year is $34,000.

| The
Presidential Enhanced Graduate Assistantship Award is awarded
to students based on GRE scores, GPA, and recommendations from the
Chairperson and Dean. The award boosts the student's annual
stipend by $5,000 and is for four years. Those admitted students who
are selected for the Presidential Award are contacted by the University
Graduate School. |
FIU's
MBRS
Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) Program
is to enhance the research environment at minority-serving institutions
and increase the interest, skills, and competitiveness of students
and faculty in pursuit of biomedical research careers. The Program
covers 9 credits/semester of tuition and $15/hr for 20/hrs a week.
Full-time students seeking degrees in science or engineering, with
a GPA of 3.0 or better are invited to apply to the program. U.S. citizen
or resident alien applicants should complete the application and submit
a copy of their complete transcript, along with three letters of recommendation.
The program coordinator must receive these materials by February
28, 2003. |

The State of Florida Board of Regents (BOR)
has established a grant to assist minority students with their graduate
education in areas where they have been traditionally
underrepresented.
Eligibility: Admission to FIU
Graduate school for the first time in the summer or spring semesters of the
award year. Enrollment for a minimum of six credit hours.
Minority students (American Indian/Alaskan Native, Pacific Islander, Black
and Hispanic) who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.
The award is on a one-time basis and is for $1,300.
The application can be obtained in the University
Graduate School or downloaded from http://www.fiu.edu/ugs.
The deadline is February 15th (Spring admission) or April 1st (Summer
admission).

The Florida Education Fund (FEF) in
Tampa, Florida provides fellowships for African American citizens to pursue
Ph.D. degrees in the state of Florida.
Eligibility: Applicants must
be African American, U.S. citizens ready to start their Ph.D. degree.
The fellowship will be awarded only to persons who intend to seek the Ph.D.
degree. The award is up to $5000 per year plus an annual stipend on
$12,000.

The application deadline is January 15th of every year.

The Office of Equal Opportunity Programs,
in conjunction with the Florida Board of Regents (BOR), offers a number of
fellowships to minority graduate students.
Eligibility: Is restricted to
minority students who are permanent residents of the United States and have
been admitted into select graduate disciplines and professional program
where minority graduate students are disproportionately
underrepresented. The award is up to $5,000 per year.

The Financial Aid Office pays up to $1,000
per semester (Graduate Need-Based Grant) to students who have financial
need. Students must complete a financial aid form which can be obtained

Graduate Assistantships involve work
assignments as teaching or research assistantships. The Biology
Department offers new students an annual $15,000 stipend for
teaching undergraduate labs for a total of 20 hours/week. Assistantships
carry either a partial (TA) or full tuition waiver.

limited amount of scholarships funds is available through the Dean's
Office of every college. Criteria for awarding these funds,
as well as the amount of the award, vary from one academic unit to

The purpose of
The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is to
provide opportunities for continuing
generations of able and accomplished New Americans to
achieve leadership in their chosen fields. The Program is
established in recognition of the contributions New Americans
have made to American life and in gratitude for the
opportunities the United States has afforded the donors and
their family.
Eligibility: Applicants must be (1) is a resident alien; i.e., holds a Green Card or, (2) has been naturalized as a U.S. citizen or (3)
is the child of two parents who are both naturalized citizens.
The award is intended for students who are in their first or second years of
graduate study and is for a maintenance grant of $20,000 plus 1/2 of
tuition.
The completed application must be
postmarked by November 30, 2002.

Every two years the Florida Aquatic Plant
Management Society (FAPMS) solicits applications for an upper
division/graduate scholarship for students conducting research or
anticipating research in the general subject area of invasive aquatic plant
management. This scholarship is for $1,000 to $2,000 and is for U.S.
Citizen students with a GPA of 3.0 or above, majoring in the field of study
directly related to the management of freshwater, aquatic vegetation for the
ecological benefit of aquatic or freshwater environments.
Completed applications must be received
by August 15, 2002. Please stop by the Graduate
Biology Program Office in FIU, University Park Campus, OE 246 to
obtain an application.

| The
College of
Arts and Sciences supports graduate student travel to professional
meetings on a match basis. Up to $200 is awarded on an annual
basis per student for travel. Applications for the Graduate
Student Travel Subsidy must be submitted at least 4 week prior
to travel date and must be accompanied by a memo from the Graduate
Program Director/Chair, unofficial transcript, program from conference,
and a Travel Authorization Request (TAR). Please see the

The
Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research program awards small research
grants to full-time undergraduate and graduate students from all areas of
the sciences and engineering. Grants range from a few hundred dollars
to $1,000. Funds may be used to purchase non-standard laboratory equipment
necessary to complete a research project or for travel expenses to a research
site.
Submission deadlines for this grant are
March 15th and October 15th. This grant has no citizenship restrictions,
so all international and permanent resident students are encouraged to apply.

The Xerces Society
is now accepting applications for two $3,750 awards for Lepidoptera
research/conservation projects to be executed in 2003.
The Dewind awards are given
to a person or persons engaged in studies or research
leading to a university degree (graduate or undergraduate) related to
Lepidoptera research and conservation, and working or intending to work
in

Florida International University is invited to make a nomination to
Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) for a student to attend
the 2003 Nobel Laureate meeting to be held June 30 - July
4, 2003 in Lindau, Germany.
Eligible students must have completed by September 2003 two years, but not more than three years, toward a doctoral degree in biology or
medicine or a related discipline (for example, biochemistry, biophysics, computer science, engineering, pharmacology,
biotechnology); be a U.S. citizen; and be currently enrolled at a university as a full-time graduate student. They must be participating
in a research project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or other
Federal Agency or on tenure as a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. ORAU shares DOE's interest in receiving
nominations from a diverse group of students, including women and minorities.
Deadline: All nominations must be received by Thursday,
January 23, 2003.

The Florida Exotic Plant
Council (FLEPPC) has available
funding for a small number of research grants/scholarships for students
conducting studies related to invasive exotic plant management in
Florida.
The deadline for proposal
admission is January 31, 2003 by 5:00 pm.
Written proposals should be no more than three pages in length and
should request funding for no more than $2,500. The proposal should
include a summary of the research project and its relationship with
Florida exotic plant management problems. Particular plant species
involved in the study should be one or more of the Category I or
Category II exotic pest species listed by FLEPPC (http://www.fleppc.org).
In addition , the applicant should provide complete contact
information and detailed budget -- with an explanation of how the
funding will be used. Examples include (but are not limited to)
travel funds for field work, funds for research equipment or supplies
(or temporary use of specialized equipment), stipend for applicant's
projectrequested are to be used for the direct costs of conducting
research on the proposed project and are not to be used for indirect
costs incurred by the student's university.
Eligibility: Must be undergraduate
or graduate student enrolled at an accredited institution of higher
learning. The research must be on a listed Florida invasive plant

An accompanying letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor
is strongly encouraged.
