DEPARTMENTAL SEMINARS

Sudhakar Veeranki (Major Advisor: Leung Kim) presented his dissertation proposal seminar entitled "Molecular characterization of role of Ddlkb1 in Dictyostelium development and stress responses" on 7 Janaury 2008.

Jay Munyon (Major Advisor: Evelyn Gaiser) presented his Master's proposal seminar entitled "Influence of periphyton on carbon dioxide sequestration along enrichment and hydrologic gradients in Everglades marshes" on 9 January 2008.

GRANTS

Clifton B. Ruehl (Major Advisor: Joel Trexler) was recently awarded an Everglades Foundation Fellowship for his research proposal entitled "An Integrative Approach to Understanding Top-down and Bottom-up Processes limiting Snail Populations in the Everglades". Congratulations Cliff!

APPOINTMENTS

Rudolf von May (Major Advisor: Maureen Donnelly) was selected to serve as the working group chair for Peru, for the Amphibian Specialist Group of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature/Species Survival Commission (http://www.amphibians.org/global_network.php). Congratulations Rudolf!

MOVING ON

Amita Quadros (Major Advisor: Ophelia Weeks) recently accepted a position that will bring her south to Miami Springs. Dr. Quadros joined Allied Research in Miami Gardens as the Clinical Study Manager overseeing Phase 1 clinical trials. Congratulations Amita!

Jamie Myers (Major Advisor: Laurie Richardson) recently accepted a position as a Research Associate (II) for the Miami Institute of Human Genomics, University of Miami. She will start her new job in mid-February. Congratulations Jamie!

FORMER STUDENTS

Ralph Saporito (Major Advisor: Maureen Donnelly) recently published a co-authored paper online: Daly, J.W., H.M. Garraffo, TW. Spande, L-A. Giddings, R.A. Saporito, D.R. Vieites, and M. Vences. 2008. Individual and geographic variation of skin alkaloids in three species of Madagascan poison frogs (Mantella). Journal of Chemical Ecology.
