Mario H. Perez, Ph.D. candidate (major advisor: Dr. F. Noriega)
presented his dissertation proposal on Oct 17th entitled: “Metal
resistance in the Yellow Fever Mosquito (Aedes aegypti)”.
Melissa Doud, Ph.D. student (major advisor: Dr. K. Mathee) presented
an invited talk and a poster at the North American Cystic Fibrosis
Conference in Orlando, FL, entitled "Molecular Analysis Showing
Diverse Respiratory Fungal Infections in South Florida Cystic Fibrosis
Patients".

Marcy Lowenstein, Ph.D. candidate (major advisor: Dr. L. Kos): “Interaction
between the transcription factor, Sox10, and Endothelin receptor
B in the melanocyte lineage.”
Amy Saldana, Ph.D. student (major advisor: Dr. L. Kos): “Ednrb
expression pattern and role in the developing murine brain and spinal
cord.”
Marbelys Rodriguez, Ph.D. student (major advisor: Dr. L. Kim):
“ MPL1 is essential for proper ERK2 phosphorylation and cell
motility.”
James J. Valdes, Ph.D. candidate (major advisor: Dr. O. Weeks):
“Estrogen and lithium alter NMDAR subunit NR1 mRNA and cell
viability in cortical and hippocampal brain cell cultures.”
Claude-Henry Volmar, Ph.D. candidate (major advisor: Dr. O. Weeks)
in collaboration with Nikunj Patel, Ph.D. candidate (major advisor:
Dr. O. Weeks) and Amita Quadros, Ph.D. 2007 (major advisor: Dr.

Marbelys Rodriguez, Ph.D. student (major advisor: Dr. L. Kim) won
the best talk award at the MBRS Mini-Symposium.
Cary Pirone, Ph.D. candidate (major advisor: Dr. D. Lee) ran the
phytochemical contributed papers section of the Botanical Society
of America annual meetings (July 2008, Vancouver) and also gave
an oral presentation in that section entitled: "A mammalian
pigment in a plant".
