DEPARTMENTAL SEMINARS

Elizabeth Harrison (Major Advisor: Joel Trexler) presented her dissertation proposal seminar entitled “Analyzing the invasion success of ‘Cichlasoma’ urophthalmus (Mayan cichlid) in the Florida Everglades’ on 3 July 2008 at 1:00 pm in WC 130.

Tanya Simms (Major Advisor: Rene Herrera) presented her Dissertation Proposal seminar entitled “The peopling of the Bahamas: A phylogeographical perspective” on 8 July 2008 at 9:30 AM in PCA 165 (Architecture Building).

Meagan Dunphy-Daly (Major Advisor: Mike Heithaus) defended her Master’s Thesis entitled “Temporal variation in dwarf sperm whale (Kogia sima) habitat use and group size off Great Abaco Island, The Bahamas on 11 July 2008 at 10:00 am in PC 431.

GRANTS

Kristen Kuehl (Major Advisor: Laurie Richardson) received a two-year EPA-GRO grant to support her Master’s Thesis Research. Congratulations Kristen!

Roxaneh Khorsand (Major Advisor: Suzanne Koptur recently received two grants to support her research. She got a grant from the International Palm Society ($4,500) and a grant from the Montgomery Botanical Center. Congratulations Roxaneh!


PRESENTATIONS

Jeremy Vaudo (Major Advisor: Mike Heithaus) presented a co-authored paper during the Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists in Montreal Canada (July 24-28):: Factors Influencing the Abundance of Sympatric Ray Species over a Shallow Sandflat in Shark Bay, Western Australia (with Mike Heithaus).

Steven Whitfield (Major Advisor: Maureen Donnelly) presented a co-authored paper during the Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists in Montreal Canada (July 24-28): Decline and conservation of amphibians in Central America. (with Karen Lips, Harold Heatwole, and Maureen Donnelly).

FORMER STUDENTS

James Watling (Major Advisor: Maureen Donnelly) recently published a co-authored paper: Savage, J.M. and J.I. Watling. 2008. Not so rare snakes: a revision of the Geophis sieboldi group (Colubridae: Dipsadinae) in lower Central America and Colombia. Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 153: 561-599.
