Flavia Carneiro Brito, Ph.D. candidate (major advisor: Dr. L. Kos)
successfully defended her dissertation entitled: “Melanocytes
in the developing and adult atrioventricular valves of the murine
heart” on November 7th.
Jeremy Moynihan, Ph.D. candidate (major advisor: Dr. J. Francisco
Ortega) successfully defended his dissertation entitled: “Dioon
Lindl. (Zamiaceae): Perspectives from phylogeny and a population
study of D. edule” on November 10th.
Karen Laubengayer, M.S. candidate (major advisor: Dr. J. Francisco
Ortega) successfully defended her thesis entitled: “Aiphanes
minima (Gaertn.) Burret (Arecaceae): A morphological analysis of
the Lesser Antillean Species Complex.” on Novemebr 6th.
Beyte Barrios Roque, M.S. student (major advisor: Dr. S. Koptur)
presented her thesis proposal entitled: “ Fire, flowering,
and fragmentation: The effect of seasonal fires on the reproductive
biology of pineland allamanda (Angadenia berteroi), a rare shrub
of the pine rocklands.” on November 10th.
Krustin Kuehl, M.S. student (major advisor: Dr. L. Richardson)
presented her thesis proposal entitled: “Differences in susceptibility
of black band disease (BBD) of two species of the host coral Diploria
on Bermuda reefs. “ on November 17th.
Vanessa Haley, M.S. student (major advisor: Dr. C. Layman) presented
her thesis proposal entitled: “Understanding bonefish spawning
movement around Andros Island, The Bahamas.” on November 21st.

Zack Jud, Ph.D. student (major advisor: Dr. C. Layman) presented
two invited talks at the International Bonefish and Tarpon Symposium
in Dania, FL, entitled "The diet of age-0 tarpon in Indian
River Lagoon mosquito control impoundments: Examining dietary composition
in relation to size and habitat," as well as "Otolith
microchemistry and otolith morphometrics of juvenile tarpon."
Zack was also selected to present a simplified version of his first
talk at a community outreach meeting in Key Largo, FL, during the
final day of the conference.
Claude-Henry Volmar, Ph.D. candidate (major advisor: Dr. O. Weeks)
presented the following poster at the Society for Neuroscience Meeting
in Washington DC:

Steven Whitfield’s, Ph.D. candidate (major advisor: Dr. M.
Donnelly), work was the theme of a news article entitled “A
frog’s foe” by Lucie Guo that appeared in the November
issue of The Scientist.
