Sarah J. Colby (Major Advisor: Steve Oberbauer) presented her Thesis
Defense Seminar entitled "Effects of a sudden freeze-thaw event
on Sphagnum girgensohnii grown under different light and temperature
regimes" on 29 October 2007 at 2:00 pm in WC 130.
Nora Oleas (Major Advisor: Javier Francisco-Ortega) recently received
the Delzie Demaree Travel Award ($300) from the Botanical Institute
of Texas to help defray the cost of a trip to St. Louis for the
54th Annual Systematics Symposium at Missouri Botanical Garden (12-13
October 2007). The symposium topic was "Biodiversity and Conservation
in the Andes." Congratulations Nora!
Richard Chang (Major Advisor: Frank Jochem), Jennifer Lewis (Major
Advisor: Doug Wartzok), and Adam Rosenblatt (Major Advisor: Mike
Heithaus) received a $1600 Graduate Student Vehicle Grant from the
Marine Biology Program at FIU. Congratulations Richard, Jennifer,
and Adam!
Laura May-Collado (Major Advisor: Doug Wartzok) recently published
a co-authored paper: May-Collado, L.J., I. Agnarsson, and D. Wartzok.

that a paper from her Master's research project was accepted for
publication: Dunphy-Daly, M.M., M.R. Heithaus, and D.E. Claridge.

Cassandra Quave (Major Advisor: Brad Bennett) recently presented
at poster at the NIH Research Festival (10-12 October 2007, Bethesda,
MD). The NIH National Graduate Student Research Festival (NGSRF)
is an annual two-day event held on the main NIH campus in Bethesda,
MD. The Festival introduces 250 advanced graduate students in the
sciences to the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP) with the aim
of recruiting them to do postdoctoral training at the NIH. Competition
to participate in the Festival is intense; in 2006, 964 applications
were received! Cassandra's presentation was among those selected:

The Comparative Immunology Club hosted a seminar by Dr. Miki Nakao
entitled "The Immunobiology of Teleosts" on 4 October
2007.
The MCB Club and LTER co-hosted a movie night on 31 October at
5 pm at Ecotank (ECS 158) to celebrate Halloween! We will be watching
"Invasion of the Body Snatchers."
