DEPARTMENTAL SEMINARS

Greg Koch (Major Advisor: Dan Childers) presented his Dissertation Proposal Seminar entitled "Landscape and ecosystem perspectives on phosphorus transport and transformation in the southern Everglades" on 4 September 2007 at 1:30 pm in ECS 186b.

Nora Oleas (Major Advisor: Javier Francisco-Ortega) presented her Dissertation Proposal Seminar entitled "Phylogeny, Population Genetic Structure and Niche modeling of Phaedranassa Herbert, an Endangered Genus of the Northern Andes" on 13 September 2007 at 10:00 am in WC 130.

INVITED SEMINARS

Samantha Whitcraft (Major Advisor: Craig Layman) participated in the Vemco Days Workshop, Halifax NS, Canada. August 22-24 and gave an invited talk entitled "Race to the Reef: Tracking reef fish from open ocean to nursery habitats to coral reefs and back again."

GRANTS & AWARDS

Samantha Whitcraft (Major Advisor: Craig Layman) received a $35,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Federation/NOAA International Year of the Reef 2008 for Race to the Reef: Empowering and educating the greater Loxahatchee Estuary community through active participation in acoustic tracking of sub-adult reef fish migrations form the estuary to the coral reef (Martin and Palm Beach Counties, FL). Congratulations Sam!

Samantha Whitcraft (Major Advisor: Craig Layman) received a $14,000 from NOAA for a mobile array to evaluate mangrove habitat quality for the Loxahatchee Project. Congratulations Sam!

Casurina McKinney (Major Advisor: Craig Layman) recently received a $40,000 from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and $2000 from the Disney Foundation for a project entitled "Bahamian Nassau Grouper Research and Education". Congratulations Casurina!

Cassandra Quave (Major Advisor: Brad Bennett) recently received a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award for Individual Predoctoral Fellowships to Promote Diversity in Health Related Research ($33,723) from the NIH through NCCAM (National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine) for her project entitled "Anti-pathogenic activity of natural products from plants." Congratulations Cassandra!

The MCB club held their first event which was a HAPPY HOUR at Titanic on 7 September 2007 at 6 pm!

The BGSA held a mixer outside WC 130 on Friday September 14 at 4:00 pm.
