COURSE OFFERING
TIME: Friday, July 15th, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Saturday, July 16th, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Sunday, July 17th, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
REGISTRATION: Course reference PCB 5238 (1 credit)
(1 credit, sect# RA9B, class # 57067)
INSTRUCTORS: Charles Bigger, Ph.D. Dept of Biological Sciences
Sylvia L. Smith, Ph.D. Dept of Biological Sciences
DESCRIPTION: The workshop will introduce participants to current research direction in comparative immunology
and address the advantages and problems associated with working with
marine animals. In the laboratory students will isolate, study and compare morphology and function
of blood cells from a variety of animals, assay for innate immune function, and learn how to handle
and obtain specimens from marine species.
Students/participants are encouraged to bring their own samples for analysis. Please contact Nichole Hinds
(nhinds01@fiu.edu) for guidelines. Every effort will be made to provide manuals prior to each workshop.

DESCRIPTION: The workshop will cover selected molecular techniques (e.g. nucleic acid isolation
and purification, PCR, Northern and Southern blotting) for the analysis of material obtained from vertebrate
(including mammals) and invertebrate organisms studied in workshop#1. This workshop will take a
comparative approach in the application of molecular techniques.
Students/participants are encouraged to bring their own samples for analysis. Please contact Nichole Hinds
