Teckel

Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1680-1755)

Nationalmuseum, Stockholm

More formally titled "The Dachshund Pehr with Dead Game and a Rifle" this oil on canvas (135 x 109 cm) was painted by J-B. Oudry in 1740. Commissioned by Sweden's Count Carl Gustaf Tessin during his ambassodorship to Paris (1739-1742), this is a portrait of the Count's dachshund (teckel), Pehr, presumably showing off a days catch. The painting was purchased by Fredrik I for Queen Lovisa Ulrika from the financially strained Count Tessin in 1749. It now resides in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm (Inventory No. 864).
