Programs
The Department of Educational Foundations and Professional Studies offers
graduate specialty programs which emanate from the social and philosophical
foundations of education. These include, as offered at the University:
- Urban Education - analyzing and developing constructively the urban
contextual forces;
- TESOL/Critical cultural studies required of all professionals in
multicultural contexts;
- Multicultural, Multilingual contextual forces and intercultural
effectiveness, including ethnic, racial, gender, and family factors;
- International and Intercultural Development Education at the specialty
levels including Masters and specialty in doctoral programs of curriculum
and instruction, educational leadership, higher education and human resources development.
Our three main programs at the graduate level are:
- International and Intercultural
Development Education (IIDE) which prepares educational development
specialists capable of assuming leadership roles in a wide variety of social
and educational settings. The program emphasizes the acquisitions of
planning, management, research and evaluation skills to be applied within
national, regional and international contexts. This degree program
also stresses an understanding of the cultural. socioeconomic, technological
and political aspects of educational development and change.
- Teaching English to Speakers of Other
Languages (TESOL) which is designed to provide specialized training and
content knowledge for teachers of all levels of ESOL, K through 12, adult
education and community college education. Students who are state
certified teachers may include the five courses required for the Add-on ESOL
Endorsement as part of the Master's program.
- The Master of Science in Urban Education which is designed to provide
specialized knowledge and practice in areas related to urban/multicultural
contexts in an effort to enhance the effectiveness of educators serving in
diverse urban settings. The program is recognized by Miami-Dade County
Public Schools and for advancement in Monroe County Schools as in-field for all areas of certification. The Urban
Education Program offers five specialty tracks from which participants may
select.
