Bloodborne Pathogens
The Bloodborne Pathogen Program covers all areas at Florida International University, in which exposure to bloodborne pathogens may occur. This program provides the proper guidelines and precautions to prevent self-exposure and contamination based on OSHA requirements and recommendations.
Blood-borne Pathogen Exposure Emergencies
If you have been exposed to blood-borne pathogens through an on-the-job needle-stick, laceration, or splash, do the following IMMEDIATELY:
Needle-sticks or lacerations:
- - Wash the affected area(s) with soap and water thoroughly
- - Administer first aid if necessary
Splashes to the eye or mouth:
- - Rinse mucous membranes with water
WITHIN THE FIRST HOUR*:
- - CALL the FIU 24/7 Needle-stick Emergency Response Line at 305.279.7722. If after-hours or on the weekend, leave a message with your name and at least two contact numbers. A physician will contact you within 30 minutes.
- - SEEK medical attention. Some treatments must begin right away to effectively prevent infection (within 24 hours).
FOLLOW-UP
- - REPORT the incident to your supervisor and the FIU Biosafety Officer (348.3387)
- - FOLLOW BBP post-exposure procedures
- - OBTAIN all required paperwork from medical provider to file a Worker’s Comp claim and/or incident report. ALL exposures require an incident report
*If you are NOT an FIU employee, seek treatment IMMEDIATELY from the nearest emergency care facility
