Procedure to become an Authorized User under FIU Radioactive Material License

Authorization to use radioactive materials at Florida International University is contingent on:

1. Successfully completing FIU Radiation Safety Training
2. Maintaining compliance with requirements of the FIU Radiation Protection

1. To become an authorized user submits complete application package to the Radiation Safety Office. The application package must contain the following items:
1. Copy of resume
2. Copy of records for training and experience regarding use of radioactive materials
3. Completed RC-1 form  (click here to download form)
4. Completed Point System Acknowledgment Form
5. Proposal for use of radioactive materials containing:

1. What isotopes will be used?
2. How much activity will be used?
3. Where will the isotopes be used? (Please provide floor plan of the laboratory and adjacent areas)
4. Details of procedures for use
5. Details of safety procedures
6. Details of Security and access control

2. The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) does the following:
1. Reviews the application
2. Performs preliminary Inspection of the laboratory
3. Submits the application to FIU Radiation Control Committee (RCC) with his/her recommendations
3. RCC reviews and approves the application 
4. The RSO informs the applicant status of the application

Note: You may only begin use of radioactive materials after it is approved by the RCC.
