MUH 2116 term paper assignment

For this paper, you will acquire a complete recording by a Jazz artist listed in the Important Musicians at the end of chapter 5 through 11 (please note - this means that any musician chosen from a period earlier than bebop will result in your paper not being graded,). You will listen to it several times (more than three times). You will then write a FIVE page original essay about the music on the album in the FIRST PERSON incorporating biographical information about the artist, historical information about the recording, and your own opinions on the music. You do not have to buy this album - there are many resources such as the FIU Media library (5th floor) and the Dade County Regional libraries (closest to FIU is on Coral Way and 92 avenue).

The paper will be presented in standard, format using no font larger than 12 point with standard margins. You do not have to use footnotes, but you do have to give credit as to any quote you use in the context of the paper. (i.e.: According to Max Bennett, ".........") No quotes may be longer than two sentences and you may only use ONE quote in your paper.

You will also include a sixth sheet that lists the name of your artist, the name of the recording, the record company and their catalog number for that recording, and all your references, including websites. Be aware that using Internet materials as your own is plagiarism and will be treated as such. I am using www.turnitin.com at my discretion for screening the papers for Internet content and any paper containing non-original materials other than the one referenced quote will result in an automatic "F" for the class. Similarly, any papers from previous classes that are recycled will result in the same.

The paper will be turned in without a cover of any sort, will be stapled in the upper left hand corner, and EVERY page will have a small header containing the student's name, panther id number, and class section and time. Any paper turned in otherwise will NOT be graded. The paper will also be without a title on the first page and the actual paper should start right under the header.

Because of previous overuse, the following artists cannot be used for your project; this doesn't mean they are not important to Jazz History, but rather they have been explored too many time by previous students and a fresh start is needed. Any project using the below artists will NOT BE GRADED.:

Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington.
