SICK INMATES SUBJECTED TO DEGRADING TREATMENT
November 1, 1996
Jose Marti's Commission for Human Rights denounced from the town of Camajuani, Villaclara province, the critical situation faced by several ill inmates at the Provincial Prison in Santa Clara, Villaclara province.
Among the most common illnesses are; tuberculosis, hepatitis, neuritis, ulcers and hypertension. The sick inmates at this prison, the same as all the other prisoners, suffer from poor nutrition and lack of medical attention and are not excempt from the brutal and inhumane treatment to which all prisoners are subjected.
According to the report given by Felix Leonar, spokesman for this organization, to Miami activist Tete Machado, "the situation is turning critical and they have already complained to the prison director, Luis Perez Alcantara and to Dr. Ramirez, without having their concerns addressed, (this is) something which is threatening the lives of the prisoners.
Among the most critical cases are the following: Juan Enrique Justis, Ivan Silverio Perez, Juan Bruno Lopez Vazquez and Adalberto Capo Orrelly.
Dozens of inmates who are also sick with tuberculosis, have been isolated to an area of the infirmary, among them are political prisoners Oswaldo Gomez Perez, Emilio Gonzalez Mateo, and Noel Reinoso Abreu.
In spite of their health, these prisoners are being subjected to frequent beatings.
Last October 14th, several of the prisoners were beaten because they insisted on getting urgent medical attention for a fellow prisoner who was vomiting blood. Among the military officers taking part in this shameful act were Raul Jimenez, Julio Reyes, and Roberto Lima, head of maintaining order at the prison.
Last October 22nd, inmate Jose Andres Mullet Can~izarez was brutally beaten by military officers Raul Orrelly de la Oz and Amaury Machado for trying to take food to a sick inmate.
Also last week, inmate Losleidi Colina Martinez was beaten by officer Orrelly de la Oz for delaying the line walking towards the prison cafeteria.
Report issued in Miami on October 31, 1996.
MOTHER CONCERNED OVER THE FATE OF HER JAILED DAUGHTER
Mrs. Mireya Luzon, mother of political prisoner Curra Luzon, issued a statement from Havana that her daughter, jailed at Kilo 5 prison, Camaguey province, is in very poor health due to horrible pains in her bones, caused by swelling, and that she is not getting adequate medical attention. "If I didn't take medicine and some food to her, she would not (be able to) leave prison alive", said Luzon to Miami activist Ariel Hidalgo and added that, in order to take her daughter some supplies, she had to travel hundreds of kilometers from Havana city where she lives to the jail, in spite of the difficulties with transportation.
Curra Luzon, a leader in the Nationalist Agenda Movement, was sentenced in 1994 to 3 years in prison for the alleged crime of "enemy propaganda". She has not been granted conditional terms for release nor has she been issued passes to go home in spite of the fact that she has accepted their "Rehabilitation Plan" as a precondition. On the contrary, they keep a close watch on her and consider her to be dangerous".
