FORBES DEMANDS U.S. ACTION AGAINST CHERNOBYL-STYLE THREAT OFF U.S. SHORE
Shoddy Russian-built Reactors in Cuba Endanger Southern United States

(Bedminster, NJ) -- Today Republican Presidential Candidate Steve Forbes warned of a Chernobyl-style nuclear threat less than a hundred miles off the coast of the United States.

Forbes was referring to the construction of two nuclear reactors being built in Fidel Castro's Cuba "with the advice and aid of Russia." Shoddy building and poor safety standards threaten to create a Chernobyl-style disaster if the reactors are ever activated.

"What we have here within miles of our shores are nuclear reactors designed by the country that built Chernobyl for the country that last week shot down and murdered 4 Americans in cold blood," said Forbes.

"Where is the leadership of President Clinton? Where is the leadership of Senate Majority Leader Dole as Castro builds Chernobyl-style nuclear reactors off our coast?" asked Forbes.

Forbes cited the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to show that if a nuclear meltdown occurred in Cuba, radioactive fallout would reach Key West within 24 hours. Within a week, radioactive fallout could stretch from Texas and Louisiana to the entire eastern seaboard of the United States.

"The President should take decisive action to ensure that those reactors never get up and running," said Forbes. "The stakes are too high to sit back and do nothing."
