Young men and women inside of Cuba are on their 64th day (Dec. 12, 1997)
on hunger strike.
After 64 days on hunger strike in the city of Santa Clara, the members of
the Human Rights Party (Partido Pro Derechos Humanos) afiliated with the
Andrei Sakharov Foundation: Daula Carpio Matas (33yrs old), Lilian Meneses
Martinez (45), Illeana Penalvar Duque (26), Danilo Santos Mendez (35),
Jose Antonio Alvarado Almeida (34), Ivan Lema Romero (35) and Jose Manuel
Yera Benitez,remain firm in their position demanding that:
1. Lessening the repressive sanctions in this case, especially for those
who find themselves arbitrarily arrested, they are: Roxana Carpio Matas,
in the women's prison of Guamajal; Jose Manuel Yera Benitez, in the prison
Las Grimas; Ivan Lema Romero and Vicente Garcia Ramos, both in the prison
La Pendiente.
2. That the charges imposed by the Castroite tribunals of association to
cause delinquency "Asociacion para Delinquir" be dropped, given their
unquestionable status as human rights activists for the Cuban people.
