Havana, June 10, 1999 - Yesterday morning Eduardo Estrada, of Habana Press, was beaten whilre riding on a bus in the neihborhood of Santo Suárez heading to cover the third day of the fast being engaged in by members of the opposition and human rights defenders in this capital.

Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet, who provided this information to the Independent Journalists Cooperative (Cooperativa de Periodistas Independientes) added that the attack was carried out without any previous altercation and even though the reporter was beaten with a blunt object in the face it was not responded to avoid a commotion.

What was most significant, according to the director of the Lawton Foundation for Human Rights (Fundación Lawton de Derechos Humanos ) and one of the fasters of Tamarindo 34, is that there was not even an exchange of words or looks before the surprise attack.
