Planning a trip to Cuba? Here are some questions to ask

By Ivan_Hernandez@harcourtbrace.com

As long as you're planning a trip to Cuba so that you can come back to educate the rest of us here's a list of things you might want to research while you're there. STOP!!!! Read my list and respond, after all I read yours.

1. What exactly is the legal definition of "dangerousness"?
2. Is it true that speaking ill of Fidel Castro carries a sentence of 6 months to a year?
3. Why are opposition political parties forbidden in the Cuban constitution?
4. Why is the right to peaceful assembly prohibited to non-government sanctioned institutions?
5. Why is the Cuban government practicing "tourism apartheid" against its citizens?
6. Why are blacks so under represented in the National Assembly?
7. Why can't foreigners meet with human rights advocates in Cuba?
8. How many political prisoners are there in Cuba? Of what were they convicted?
9. Why not conduct a plebiscite in Cuba as to whether the people want to remain a socialist state?
10. What has been the growth rate of prostitution in Cuba in the last 6 years?
11. How many "legal" non-governmental news agencies exist? (I'll answer that: 0)

Here's a suggestion, read these questions and if you think you know the answer today, write it down. Then when you're in Cuba try to get them answered and compare what you are told with what you see and what you don't see and are not told.

A word of warning though, if you ask any of these questions you might get yourself deported in record time, so caveat emptor.
