The documents include birth and marriage certificates, a court
sentence, letters of reference and photocopies of passports belonging to
Roberto Jorge Rodriguez, 34, and Marlen Rodriguez Chavez, 35, both of
Havana.
Reached by phone Monday, a member of that organization told El Nuevo
Herald that he knew the couple but that he did not know their current
whereabouts.
A resident of Miami Beach found the purse on the beach Nov. 21. Since
then, no one has reported its loss or stepped forward to claim it.
According to the photocopies of the passports, the couple entered the
Bahamas legally Nov. 10. Nothing more is known. The Rodriguezes may have
drowned while trying to reach the United States illegally, or they may
have been safely delivered to shore by smugglers and dropped the purse at
that time.
For the moment, the authorities refuse to speculate.
The documents also show that Roberto Rodriguez worked as a television
technician at the Retail Trade Association of Marianao and that he was
taken to court by that group in 1992 for his religious activities.
A Ministry of Justice certificate states that Rodriguez was tried and
imprisoned for dealing in ``clandestine publications'' and for
``speculation.''
