The ``Law for the Protection of Cuba's National Independence and Economy,'' adopted February 16, was published in Cuba's official gazette, making it the law of the land under President Fidel Castro's regime.

Its passage and the trial of Cuba's four most important opposition leaders led to outcries from several nations, lawmakers and human rights groups.

The official gazette also released changes to the penal code, also approved February 16, which increase the severity of punishments for drug trafficking and sexual assault, including the death penalty.
