School-Based Life Skills Curriculum

The School-Based Life Skills Curriculum consists of the following features:
  • Consists of four levels of adult ESL/Literacy lesson plans and corresponding student handouts: Pre-beginning, Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced
  • Utilizes a competency-based model of instruction for adults combined with a "sheltered English" approach
  • Provides content in the specific areas of academic involvement, school-related issues and life skills while students acquire English proficiency
  • Utilizes strategies that include comprehensible input, cooperative learning, authentic materials & role-plays
  • Includes intergenerational activities
  • Packaged in convenient, easy-to-use 3-ring binders and reproducible handouts

Lesson plans cover such topics as:
  • Personal Identification and Communication (personal information, calendar/time)
  • Going to School (school schedules, school attendance/visit, report cards, parent-teacher conferences/PTA, school tests)
  • Feeling Sick (going to the pharmacy, making a doctor's appointment)
  • Going Shopping (school lunches, shopping for school clothes)
  • Housing (homework and discipline)
  • Transportation (transit schedules/fares, field-trips)
  • Getting a Job (applying for a job, completing applications)
