FIU Hockey Personnel Guide and Rulebook

The purpose of this rulebook/guidebook is to help all those involved with the team and club. On this page you will find information that is invaluable to the daily running of the club. The leaders of the team and club expect that all personnel know the rules that govern our organization.

I reiterate that everyone will know the rules and ignorance will no longer be tolerated. Thank you for taking the time to read the text and Good Luck to the players, coaches, and members of the FIU Hockey Team/Club.

Guidebook

  • All rules not stated in the rulebook will be decided by a majority vote of the officers.
  • The team and club will follow the SOC Handbook
  • The team and club will also follow the Club's Constitution
  • Anyone who wants a copy of the rulebook, will be charged two dollars, money going into the clubs funds.

Notification of Upcoming Events

  1. Players are personally responsible for informing themselves of events. Players can find information in a variety of ways.
    a. calling the FIU Hockey Hotline at (305) 662-9569
    b. calling the coach or other players using the personnel phone list
    c. by attending practices and meetings
    d. by emailing coaches and players
    e. using the club's website
  2. Everyone is responsible for finding out about events, ignorance will NOT be tolerated.

Club Info

  1. The FIU Hockey Club possesses a mailbox in the GC building on the third floor currently it is mailbox 96.
    a. The President is the only person who will pick up the mail the team receives.
  2. The FIU Hockey Club is an official club of Florida International University.
  3. Club and Team information will be posted on the FIU Hockey Hotline at (305) 662-9569
  4. The teams/clubs website is www.fiu.edu/~gphockey

Practice

  1. Everyone is responsible for attending practice.
  2. Everyone should bring two jerseys to all practices. One dark, one light.
  3. Everyone must bring their own puck to practice.
  4. Practice will begin exactly at the time stated.
  5. The team's coach will run the practices.
  6. During practices everyone is expected to listen and pay attention to the coach, no exceptions.
  7. People who are kicked out of a practice will be deducted 3pts (point system explained below).
  8. No one will make fun of anyone during the practices.
  9. There is absolutely no fighting at any of the practices. Each occurrence will be reviewed by the coaches and officers for a coarse of action.
  10. Remember practice makes prefect and we practice like a team in order to play like a team.

Points System
(The clubs president will determine if the points system will be in effect each semester)

Gaining Points:

  1. Going to practice = 1pt
  2. Going to a meeting = 1pt
  3. Attending a fundraiser = 2 pts
  4. Extra-activity = 1\2 - 2 ½ pts.* **
  5. All clubs officers involved in the team will receive four extra points to use throughout the year.

*  This includes finding a sponsor
    Finding large amounts of recruits
    Setting up a fund-raiser
    Sending out flyers/ promotions of the team
** These points will be determined by a majority vote of the officers

Losing Points:

  1. Miss practice = - 4 pts.
  2. Miss a meeting = -2 pts.
  3. Miss a fund-raiser = -1 pts.

Rules:

  • If a player is in the negative points at the time of the event he/she will not be allowed to attend the event.
  • If a player misses two tournaments, due to lack of points, he/she will be demoted to the "B" team. A "B" team player may then be called up to take his place.
  • If a player misses three major competitions he/she will be asked to leave the team (See remittance to the team)
  • Excused absences will deduct ¾ of a point.
  • Unexcused but notified absences will be a deduction of 2 pts.
  • Any problems or questions will be solved by a majority vote of the officers.
  • Deductions for arriving late go as follows: -15 min =-.25pts, 30min = -1pt., +30min = -1.5 pts.

Players Eligible to Play for FIU

  1. All students, faculty, and alumnus are eligible to play for the team.
  2. We do not discriminate against race, creed, sex, or anything else only a desire to play.
  3. Some tournaments require only students with proof of attendance. We will follow these rules to the letter.
  4. People who want to join the club may look at the SOC Handbook for information or the clubs website.

GPA Requirement

  • 2.1 is required by the players who attend Florida International University. Those who are faculty or alumni, this rule obviously does not apply.

Player Responsibility to the FIU Hockey Club

  • Each player will be asked to volunteer for up to three events.
  • A lack of involvement in club events may result in expulsion from the team.
  • Players are responsible for attending all events. Playing in another league is no excuse.
    Before joining any other league check with the captain or coach to see if there will be a schedule conflict. Coach approval is needed for a player to compete in any other league. Reasons for not allowing a player to play elsewhere include but are not limited to: poor attendance at practice/tournaments, conflicts in schedule, or owing money to the club. Penalties are on a case bases.

Dress Code to Games

  1. FIU Hockey tee shirts.
  2. Khakis pants only.
  3. Coaches will wear a nice shirt, tie, and pants. Coaches may also wear a polo type shirt that has the FIU Hockey Coach inscribed in the left chest.
  4. The penalty for not wearing the FIU Hockey tee shirt is being benched for one period or half the game. If a player wears any FIU shirt, not the FIU Hockey shirt tee shirt the penalty will be a benching of 15 minutes.
  5. FIU Hockey Hats may be worn before and after games.
  6. It is also highly encouraged that players wear their tee shirts after the game.
  7. The team also recommends that all club members attending games please wear their tee-shirts

Dress Code to Events

  • When attending events where one is representing the club or team please wear your FIU Hockey tee shirts unless otherwise stated.
  • Attire to all FIU Hockey Dinners will be semi-formal.
  • At  fundraising events players should also wear their FIU hockey tee shirts.

Line Up going to the Rink

  1. Everyone will line up in single file from the dressing room to the rink exceptions are the Captain and Assistant Captain (senior, see A-Captains) who may be on the side of the line in order to give motivation to the team.
  2. Goaltenders will lead the line (starting goaltender first).
  3. The senior assistant captain will be the last person in line.
  4. The coach or assistant captain will close and lock the dressing room and make sure everyone is lined up.
  5. The penalty for not following the lineup rules will be determined by the coach.

Pre Game Pep Talk

  1. The location for the pregame talk will be next to the bench or by the net.
  2. All players including coaches must attend. The only exceptions are the backup goaltender and a designated player who may practice at the net. If the backup goaltender does not wish to practice at the net the starting goaltender may practice his/her angles.
  3. Only FIU Hockey Personnel may address the team, any person who wishes to speak must get permission from the coach, GM, or captain.

Goaltenders

  1. The FIU Hockey Team will bring two goaltenders to every competition. A third goaltender will be allowed to suit up but this must be approved by the Captain or Coach.
  2. Goaltenders will be scrutinized to the same rules as players.
  3. Goaltenders will have the opportunity to advance in the same fashion as players. Remember hard work is noticed.

The Distribution of Helmet Decals

  1. Decals will be awarded for three reasons
        a. exceptional play in a game
        b. hard work at practice
        c. extraordinary work to advance the team or club
  2. Decals are the only stickers players are allowed to wear on their helmets.
  3. The team's president will give decals for extraordinary work and the team's coach will present to the players.

Rules for Hockey Trips

  1. There will be no consumption of alcohol on club trips.
  2. The time for curfew is not going to be penalized but the team asks that players remember that you are part of a team.
  3. The FIU Hockey Team does not take responsibility for any damage to hotel rooms, etc.
  4. Players found with any illegal substance will immediately be put on suspension and referred to a substance abuse program.
  5. We encourage players to arrive to the rink with the caravan. Players who do not, must arrive a minimum of 25 minutes before game time or risk losing a period of play.
  6. We also want to remind players that they are representing Florida International University and must act in accordance. The team will discuss any action, which is in any way degrading to the team, and its officers and a penalty will be assessed.
  7. Hotel information will be posted on the FIU Hockey Hotline.

Coach

  1. He/she has full control of the team aspect of the club.
  2. He/she has the authority to choose all players for the team.
  3. He/she has the right to expel any player from the team but not the club.
  4. Full control of practice and games including:
    a. game plays
    b. lines and line changes
    c. player minutes
    d. drills
    e. overall strategy
    f. choosing the goaltender that will start
    g. passing out game decals
    h. calling time outs
    i. arguing calls
    j. pulling the goaltender
  5. He/she is the diplomat to any given function that involves the team.
  6. Removal of any coach requires ¾ vote of the officers or 4/5 vote of the players.
  7. Coaches are required to announce the team's lineup two days prior to the competition.
  8. Coaches must announce the lines ½ hour prior to game time.
  9. If the coach is absent, the captain will take all the duties of the coach.


Captain/Assistant Captains

  1. The captain is second in charge under the coach. With absence of the coach the captain will be in charge.
  2. The coach, captain, the assistant captains, and the goaltender are the only people allowed to argue calls during the game.
  3. The coach, captain, the assistant captains, and the goaltender are the only people allowed to call time outs. The team's coach can overrule this rule.
  4. The senior Assistant Captain is in charge in the absence of the coach and captain.
  5. The Captain for the B team will be the spokesman for the B-team at general and officer meetings.
  6. Both Captains have the option of attending officers meeting but do not have the power to vote.
  7. The duty of the assistant captains include:
    a. helping to keep discipline at games and practice
    b. motivate the team
    c. make sure the team is all on the same page
    d. leaders of the team
    e. make sure the team is getting along
    f. inform the person in charge of wrong doing
    g. help the coaches and captain
  8. The duties of the Captain include:
    a. help out the coach
    b. make sure the team is running smoothly
    c. leader of the team
    d. make sure people are following the rules
    e. motivate the team
    f. spokesman for the team at officer meetings
    g. diplomat for the team with the GM and coach
    h. etc
  9. Dismissal of a captain or assistant captain requires two of the following three actions.
    a. Majority vote of the officers
    b. Coaches decision
    c. Majority of the team
  10. There will be 1 captain and two assistant captains per team.

Voting for Captains and Assistant Captains

  • At the beginning of the fall school term there will be a vote by the team
  • Coach's vote will count as 4 players
  • The general manager's vote will count as 2 players.
  • The president or secretary of the club will tally the results.
  • The vote will be made in any fashion, which is confidential.
  • In the chance there is a tie the officers of the club will make the final decision, if one is still not found the president will decide.

Officers

  1. Officers will be chosen to serve for a semester. Summer is not considered a semester.
  2. See constitution for voting rules.
  3. Officers may receive special tee shirt for their work.

President:
a. In charge of overseeing everything that takes place in the organization including the team.
b. Hold and conduct officer and general meetings
c. Attend SOC meetings
d. Remain in contact with Rec. Department
e. Get all the mail delivered to the team/club
f. In charge of the FIU Hockey Hotline
g. Divide the work load around the club

Vice-president
a. Speak with the athletic department
b. Attend SOC meetings
c. Booking hotels
d. Make sure that the webmaster is doing his work

Secretary
a. In charge of writing down everything that takes place in the officer and general meetings and turn them into the webmaster and the SOC
b. In charge of the phone list and its distribution
c. In charge of assuring that people attend the workshops

Treasurer
a. In charge of collecting money from club members
b. Key to the account
c. 3rd person  to attend SOC meetings
d. In charge of speaking with SGA

Extra officers
These people will have ½ the voting power of the regular officers at their meetings. They may also receive the tee shirt. People who take on more than one job can only have up to 1 vote. For example, if a person is SD and GM they will vote equal to a regular officer.

Social Director
a. In charge of entertainment info on trips
b. Also find one event everyone on a trip can attend. For example a movie, hockey game, etc.
c. In charge of entertainment at any event made by the club/team
d. Keep frats and soroties updated regarding the team.

Webmaster
a. In charge of updating the website, a least one time per week.
b. In charge of finding webrings, links, etc.

Sponsor Director
a. In charge of keeping sponsors, and the club advisor informed on events
b. Educating individuals on finding new sponsors, to find them themselves. He/she will be the spokesman for the team/club to these potential sponsors.
c. Find people to help the team.

General Manager
a. Promotion head in and out of the school
b. Setting up scrimmages
c. Finding practice facilities
d. Writing to The Beacon, radio station, local TV, and newspapers.
e. In charge of keeping alumni association updated on the team
f. Will be one of the persons along with captain and assistant captains to evaluate up and coming talent at tryouts

FIU Hockey Hall of Fame

  1. Only one person per season may be inducted into the hall of fame.
  2. In order to be inducted there must be an officer's vote of ¾.
  3. People inducted will receive a plaque and name in the web page.
  4. People who are inducted must be someone who has either advanced the club/team into new levels or been one of the top players on the team.
  5. Leadership can also be a condition.
  6. People selected must have proven themselves worthy of the selection.

Dinners/Awards

  • We will try to hold two dinners per year.
  • Awards will be given out during this time.
  • In addition we will try an annual barbecue.

Fans

  1. The FIU Hockey Team welcomes everyone and anyone to come watch our games. We also hope that these games will promote more school spirit. Fans can buy FIU Hockey paraphenalia, ask any player for info.
  2. The team also has practice open for all fans to come watch.
  3. The FIU Hockey team encourages all fans to become members of the club where they will receive benefits that members receive. Look at the tryouts page for more info.
  4. If anyone who is not a member of the FIU Hockey Club would like to join us please speak to the president, vice-president, or the general manager.

Funds

  • Club funds will be allocated by a majority vote of the officers. In the case of an emergency or an action, which requires immediate action, the president and vice-president only need each other's approval.
  • Club/team funds will be kept in an account held by the treasurer and president. If any player wants to view the holding the president of treasurer has one week to display it.

Fundraising Events

  1. Fundraising events are crucial to the continuing growth of the team.
  2. We also want to state that any donations of time or money goes back to the team. Looking at it in this light might help inspire players to help.
  3. We also want to make it clear that if you as a player do not contribute to the fundraising you will not receive any of the benefits.

Amending the Guidebook

  1. Must be amended in two of the four ways:
    a. ¾ vote of the officers
    b. ¾ vote of the club members
    c. ¾ vote by the captains, coaches, and general manager
    d. President, Vice-president, G.M., Coach, Captain, senior assistant captain all agree.

Thank you for taking the time to read the handbook. The book took a lot of work so please take good care of it. Everyone is responsible for its content. I hope this book makes it easier to know the rules that govern the team/club, as well as what is expected of you.
