Domestic Violence

Since its founding, Gamma Pi has worked endlessly to promote awareness about this epidemic in our communities, as well as offer aid to the organizations that support victims by offering them a safe haven, thus removing them from eminent danger.

Our closest working relationship is with Safespace Foundation, Inc., a local battered women’s shelter which provides a multitude of services to battered women. For three years, we have helped organize toiletries for sale at the thrift shop that helps fund the shelter and donated over 20 bags of clothing and shoes for the women and children who live at the shelter, amongst other contributions. We also created an annual benefit dinner, "Art of Surviving," to raise awareness about domestic violence and pay tribute to survivors, as well as raise funds for Safespace Foundation, Inc.

In addition to making it our priority to work towards preventing domestice violence, we make an effort to work with other causes as well. We have participated in Walk for Myeloma, an annual walk hosted by our Beta Sigma Chapter at the University of Miami, Take Back the Night, Relay for Life, and the Miami AIDS Walk. We have also collaborated with Project Downtown, Hands on Miami, Regis House, and the Miami Rescue Mission.

Focused Urban Teens United and Ready for Opportunity [F.U.T.U.R.O.]

Lambda Theta Alpha prides itself on its strong ethic for community service and philanthropic programming. The F.U.T.U.R.O. program is representative of the organization's focus on the future of our youth and the opportunities for their progress and growth. An outreach initiative for young teens, F.U.T.U.R.O. is designed to lead our youth to new horizons through educational workshops, character-building activities, and one-on-one mentoring. Mentors from our organization are asked to meet with middle/high school students twice a month to provide several workshops dealing with the issues that affect teens today. Among them may be The Importance of Self-Esteem, A College Life Experience, Prepping Up for a College Interview, Cultural Pride and Awareness, and Giving Back To Your Community, to name a few. The students are encouraged to become involved in their local communities in an effort to teach them that they, too, can make a difference. By empowering the young generation, we are securing their future as leaders in our community. This program cultivates personal and academic growth, and it provides its participants with social and communication skills necessary to succeed in life. Lambda Theta Alpha feels it is imperative that we acknowledge, guide, and support our FUTURO.

F.U.T.U.R.O. also provides young female teens with the opportunity to apply for a $1,000 scholarship, which is presented at the National Awards Dinner by Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. The scholarship is awarded to the student who best embodies the spirit of F.U.T.U.R.O.
