Brief Description of the Program:

        The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Florida International University offers a curriculum designed to give the student a thorough understanding of the basic laws of science and simultaneously to stimulate and develop creative thinking, a professional attitude, economic judgment, and environmental consciousness. The aim is to develop the student's potential to the fullest, to prepare the student for superior performance as a mechanical engineer, and to provide the student with the fundamental principles necessary for pursuing advanced study in the diverse fields of engineering, science, and business.

The goal of the Mechanical Engineering Program is to provide students with an outstanding education with the following objectives:
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of engineering science and principles in the major fields of Mechanical Engineering for effective engineering practice, professional growth, and as a base for life-long learning;
  • Hands-on experience with state-of-the-art instruments and laboratory techniques to bridge classroom learning with practical, "real-life" problems;
  • The ability to utilize analytical and experimental methods and modern computer technology for decision-making and engineering design and to solve realistic engineering problems;
  • The ability to work effectively with others in a team while simultaneously maintaining independent and creative thought;
  • The ability to communicate effectively and to articulate technical matters using verbal, written, and graphic techniques;
  • An adequate background to pursue graduate studies in engineering and other fields, and
  • A sense of professional and social responsibility, including a commitment to protect both occupational and public health and safety, developed through consideration of moral, social, and ethical paradigms related to the engineering profession and practice.

Application Requirements:

The requirements for admission to the graduate program in Mechanical Engineering for applicants having a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field, from an accredited program are the following:
  • GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 in the last 60 credit hours attempted.
  • GRE verbal plus quantitative plus analytical of at least 1650 points.
  • Three letters of recommendation on the forms provided by the department.

Applicants having a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited program must also satisfy the above requirements for admission to the doctoral program. Additionally, a GPA of at least 3.3/4.0 in the Master’s program is required. Credentials of applicants with non-traditional educational credentials will be examined by the ME Department Graduate Committee on a case-by-case basis. A request by an FIU graduate student to change their major to Mechanical Engineering will be treated as a normal application for admission. In addition to the departmental requirements, all students must satisfy the University’s Graduate Policies and Procedure.


Additional Requirements for International Students:

  • TOEFL score of at least 550 points for applicants whose previous college degrees have been earned in countries where English is not the primary language.
  • Undergraduate degree-granting institution must be recognized by their government.
  • Must be eligible to continue studies in their own country.
  • Must demonstrate sufficient financial support in the form of stipends, assistantships or personal funding to satisfy FIU requirements.
