Brief Description of the Program:

        The Master of Science in the Department of Chemistry is a research-intensive degree and the M.S. program provides flexibility for students with varied interests. The program is designed to significantly advance the knowledge and skills in the chemical sciences building from the undergraduate experience and training. The coursework requires students to complete a number of traditional courses in analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic and/or physical chemistry, but includes flexibility to allow students the opportunity to take courses in more specialized topics, i.e., environmental and forensic chemistry. Students are required to write and defend a thesis. Graduates of our M.S. program are well prepared for technical jobs in the chemical industry, teaching, doctoral programs, and professional schools. We accept part-time and full-time students into the M.S. program.


Application Requirements:
  • A minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0/4.0 in chemistry and cognate science and GRE score of 1000 (verbal + quantitative) or greater is required.
  • Every student entering the graduate program in chemistry will be required to take two entrance/proficiency examinations covering standard undergraduate-level material in organic chemistry and physical chemistry (thermodynamics and kinetics).

Additional Requirements for International Students:
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in the English language by presenting a minimum score of 550 or higher paper-based and a minimum score of 213 computer-based on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
  • Certification of financial ability.
  • Medical insurance.
