Brief Description of the Program:

        The Department of Earth Science offers the Master of Science Degree and Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Geology with opportunities for concentrated studies in structural geology/tectonics, igneous petrology/geochemistry/economic geology, hydrogeology and environmental geology, stratigraphy/sedimentology, paleobiology, geophysics/paleomagnetics and remote sensing/geographic information systems. In addition, students may select a concentration in the regional geology of Southern Florida, the Caribbean, and Latin America, including problems related to the above-mentioned fields. The faculty is well supported by extramural funding, and has developed close working relationships with other universities and institutions in the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, Chile, Peru and Israel. Faculty also have a close working relationship with local institutions, such as Everglades National Park, the South Florida Water Management District, Placer Dome Inc., and the U.S. Geological Survey.


Application Requirements:
  • Hold an undergraduate degree in one or more relevant disciplines of natural science, engineering, or mathematics.
  • Have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale (or equivalent) during the last two years of undergraduate study.
  • Get the a minimum combined score on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) of 1000.
  • Curriculum vitae or resume summarizing applicant's previous experience and achievements.
  • A statement of intent, including a brief discussion (not to exceed 2000 words) of educational goals and career projections. Applicant may also include a copy of previous written scientific work.
  • Three letters of recommendation from former professors or academic advisors.


Additional Requirements for International Students:
  • Students whose native language is other than English must demonstrate an adequate level of proficiency in English as a foreign language. A score of 550 (213 computerized) or higher is required on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
  • Certification of financial ability.
  • Medical insurance.
