Brief Description of the Program:

        The Masters of Science in Psychology program at the University is designed to train practitioners and researchers who can function in a variety of applied settings. The core curriculum and admission prerequisites are intended to provide students with a base of knowledge in psychology. A distinctive feature of the program is its emphasis on a close working relationship between student and faculty. Under faculty supervision, students are encouraged to develop individually tailored programs of study that reflect both student interests and program strengths.

        The curriculum consists of 36 semester hours of graduate study in which the exposures focus specifically on training the student to perform the skills mentioned above. Students are expected to select electives, project/thesis topics, and supervised field experiences that meet not only the degree requirements, but also their academic interest and particular professional objectives. Six of the 36 semester credit hours consist of Master’s thesis credits. The Mental Health Counselor Master’s program allows students to meet unversity requirements plus the requirements for a Mental Health Counseling license.

Application Requirements:

• A 3.0 or higher GPA during the last two years as an upper division student.
• a total score (quantitative plus verbal) of 1,000 or higher on the GRE.
• The GRE and GPA stated above are only minimum requirements.
• All applications are reviewed by the Program Area Admission Committee, which makes the final admissions decisions.
• Since admission to the program is competitive, the committee’s requirements are normally higher than the minimum aforementioned standards.

Additional Requirements for International Students:

• Foreign students whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (the TOEFL examination) and obtain a 580 score of higher.
