Brief Description of the Program:

The Master of Science in Management—Information Systems (MSMIS) program is designed to provide a solid understanding of design, development, technology, and management of information systems. The program focuses on areas in high demand like electronic commerce systems, database design and administration, systems analysis and design, and project management of information systems. Technologies used in the program include Oracle, SAP, Java, PL/SQL, Cold Fusion, UML, XML, and similar emerging trends.

The MSMIS program has the following unique features:
  • A 12-month program of study, with classes held on Saturdays.
  • Most classes meet in state-of-the-art laboratories.
  • Software used in program includes Oracle, SAP, Cold Fusion, Rational Rose, Java, and XML.
  • Courses integrate conceptual and technical information with hands-on instruction.
  • Program taught by experienced faculty from the Decision Sciences and Information Systems Department and IT industry.
  • Extensive support outside the classroom.

Application Requirements:

To be eligible for admission to the MSMIS program, prospective students must:
  • Meet the general University requirements for admission to a graduate degree program as described in the FIU Graduate Catalog.
  • Hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Show high promise of success in graduate work as determined by the faculty based upon a minimum score of 500 on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or 1000 (combination of verbal and quantitative) on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score and a minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) for undergraduate study.
  • Be in good standing with all previously-attended colleges and universities.
Since the MSMIS program is very demanding, preference will be given to applicants with an IS background. Applicants who have majored in CS, MIS, or CIS will be given serious consideration, as will those who have MIS/CIS-related work experience. In the latter case, at least three years of relevant work experience are required; however, if the applicant's transcripts also show IS-oriented coursework, a shorter time period may be accepted. Similarly, if the applicant's undergraduate major is in a closely-related area—engineering or science, for example—a shorter time period for relevant work experience may be accepted.

Additional Requirements for International Students:
  • If applicant is an international student whose native language is not English, he or she also must have achieved a minimum score of 550 on the paper-based TOEFL or 213 on the computer-based TOEFL, or an equivalent score on a comparable examination.
