Pie charts are suitable when we want to show parts of a whole in a quick overview. This is typically done by illustrating percentage distributions of categories of a qualitative variable.

Pie charts are used to give a visual overview and not to make precise comparisons because it is more difficult to make comparisons of angles in a pie chart than it is to compare the lengths of bars in a bar graph.
