Introduction

At the starting point I have to put down or from the other point of view erase some marks or borderlines considering both my theme and environment chosen for the thesis. The environment my work is situated in, it´s belonging to the virtual space, to Internet, is as essential task arisen as the content of the work itself.

The form of these thesis is highly intertextual, my position between these citates and words can be described like a position between different mediums. As it consists mostly of citates, it is rather written through me than by me. My position lies in mediating, composing and concentrating these thoughts into some kind of packets, called chapters, to readers, not inventing any new stories or ideas and not even trying to analyze all the citates given as in the Web - environment everyone is able to click the link open and get the explanation by each author itself, so the interpretations seem unnecessary. Hereby given is the presentation of ideas and links to them I have found during about a year - full - of - surfing.

Idea of this work is quite simple. It relies not only in the title of this work, but also in an attempt of creating (simple) hypertextual stucture of these chapters, connecting different parts of work between themselves and with websites around the world. I am referring to my helpers, to pages with some useful information, which are composed by generous people.

I didn´t find many web-writings of the kind, with their meaning not only in their ideas but also in the environmental basis. Finnish student Juha Kämäräinen in his work (Hyperdokumenttien laatiminen sisällönkuvailuprosessina. Informaatiotutkimuksen pro gradu -tutkielma. Oulu 1995 http://wwwedu.oulu.fi/homepage/JUKAMARA/gradu/) tried to use possibilities of HTML-language in building up his hypertextual graduation work.

In my work I tried to find relevant ideas in questioning the problem of marginality. And it may seem not a surprise to anyone, that the question of marginality in digital age has started to seem popular and an eagerly observed topic. Everybody seems to deal with borders, minorities, margins. It has become a mainstream.

Few years ago, when I presented the idea of my work to the comission of the Academy of Arts, someone said, that there doesn´t exist a problem of such a kind any more, everything has become a part of ARTWORLD - the problem of marginality has lost its actuality. There are no margins any more. I agreed. From some point of wiev it really is so, but it doesn´t erase a problem in itself. And of course the problem of marginality will always be a problem of borders as in every society the borders have different meanings.

Lots of authors have dealt with the theme thoroughly, just to mention: Julia Kristeva ("Strangers to Ourselves"); Thomas McEvilley ("Art and Otherness"); Linda Nochlin ("Women, Art and Power"); Phillip Bryan Harper ("Framing the Margins ...) etc.

Why did I chose such a theme ? Well, lots of things in our lives have very personal beginnings :

The answers, if I am ever getting them, rely in trying to analyze these situations to myself.

My work consists of different separate chapters. I can´t give any specific numbers, because once started (with 16 chapters and even they are in their half-way mostly) and if I am able to have the access to Internet I am most willingly trying to continue it. If I haven´t had enough access it probably never occured to me that such kind of a work or it´s presentation form is possible. I most certainly never even reached this half-way phase, where I am at present (May 1997).

You have to live in the Net to become inlove with it. So, please forgive me all the paper-version lovers, there is no way back for me any more.

These thesis have no conclusion, for the problems and questions arisen are changing within the time.

As to the conclusion and explanation the work has been made possible with the help of my 3 personalities:
