Oral Report Instructions and Sign-Up Sheet
Because four or five reports will be given each night and we will be discussing Melville’s key works also, it is crucial that delivery time be brief—5-10 minutes.
The goal of the report is not to replicate your paper, orally.
Rather, you should focus on some aspect of your analysis or argument and/or the evolution of your thought: perhaps present the class with a key passage from the text you are working on and elaborate how you came to interpretively “master” its difficulties; or discuss the choices you had (are having!) in organizing your essay, with several different roadmaps/idea flowcharts; or even review interpretive impasses you had (are having). In other words, the report should be more geared towards workshop discussion (although there will be little time for discussion) than a formal delivery of content.
Do not read. Use very minimal notes (the secondary goal is to encourage you to become relatively script-free when you are reporting/lecturing/etc.).
If you are taking the course for undergraduate credit, the report is not a requirement.
I will pass around in class the time slot sheet below.
