Excerpt from Vespucci's Mundus Novus

The selection below comes from what, until recently, seemed to be a report of Vespucci's on his third voyage to the "New World."  Historians, however, have discovered that although some of the information in it is valid and may have been written by Vespucci, overall it is a forgery.   If its fraudulent status makes it useless in one sense, in another sense it makes it all the more useful because it shows the ideology of discovery--how Europeans wanted to see the natives in a certain way to provide a positive mirror to their own culture.
