Opportunities
Fieldwork in the coastal Everglades We often need help during our studies in the coastal Everglades. Depending on the research mission of the day (or night) volunteers may be involved in capture and tagging of alligators or sharks, fish trapping, and deploying and retreiving data loggers. Trips usually start very early in the morning from FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus and return late at night or start in the afternoon and return early the next day. For information on how to volunteer contact Phil Matich or Adam Rosenblatt.
Fieldwork in Australia For more information on volunteer opportunities in Australia visit our opportunities section of www.sberp.org.
Opportunities in the lab Any undergraduates interested in assisting with work in the lab should contact me. Students interested in potentially conducting an honors project under my supervision should contact me sometime during their junior year.
Outreach
Video-enhanced lesson plans The lab is currently in the process of developing inquiry-based lessons that use a high production quality video to take students along on research missions in Shark Bay. Students experience data collection and analysis and hypothesis testing and generation while learning about the cool species in Shark Bay. The first versions of the Shark Bay video will be available at www.sberp.org soon and we are just starting to work on Everglades-based videos.
Field research experiences for middle school teachers Every year, we pair two middle school teachers with graduate students working in Shark Bay so teachers can gain hands-on research experience. Graduate students then make a trip to the teacher's school to interact with their classes. For more information on the program and to apply, visit www.sberp.org.
Talks at local schools and educational outlets Members of the Heithaus lab give talks at local schools, museums, and field sites throughout the year. If you are interested in having somebody from the lab come to give a talk about our research, please contact me.
