The School of Journalism
and Mass Communication offers both a master's degree track and a certificate
in
Student Media Advising.
This unique program is designed for the following:

Individuals
currently teaching journalism and/or advising a student newspaper,
yearbook, magazine or broadcast operation on the middle or high
school or community college level

Individuals
thinking that a career such as this might be a good career choice
Two courses, Ethical
and Legal Foundations of the Student Press, and Student Media Advising,
offer you unique preparation for teaching any journalism class and serving
as adviser to any student publication or broadcast operation. A third
class, Trends in Graphics and Design, prepares you to understand and
teach the best in visual communication. All projects in these classes
will be oriented toward your individual situations. The Professional
Project, the capstone degree course, permits you to explore in-depth
a project of interest and use to your career as well.
Other classes provide you with a foundation for understanding the rapidly-changing
media universe and for improving your skills in journalistic courses
of interest and practical value to you.
Classes taken within the program satisfy the requirements for teacher
certification as well.
South Florida Journalism Day
Each fall the School of Journalism and Mass Communication cosponsors
its annual South Florida Journalism Day for area schools and journalism
advisers along with the Florida Scholastic Press Association.
Media professionals and related experts share their time and expertise
with those attending this full day of seminars and workshops on all
aspects of the media.
