Student Media Advising

Master's Degree/Certificate Program

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication offers both a master's degree track and a certificate in
Student Media Advising.

This unique program is designed for the following:

  • Individuals currently teaching journalism and/or advising a student newspaper, yearbook, magazine or broadcast operation on the middle or high school or community college level

  • Individuals thinking that a career such as this might be a good career choice

Two courses, Ethical and Legal Foundations of the Student Press, and Student Media Advising, offer you unique preparation for teaching any journalism class and serving as adviser to any student publication or broadcast operation. A third class, Trends in Graphics and Design, prepares you to understand and teach the best in visual communication. All projects in these classes will be oriented toward your individual situations. The Professional Project, the capstone degree course, permits you to explore in-depth a project of interest and use to your career as well.

Other classes provide you with a foundation for understanding the rapidly-changing media universe and for improving your skills in journalistic courses of interest and practical value to you.

Classes taken within the program satisfy the requirements for teacher certification as well.

South Florida Journalism Day

Each fall the School of Journalism and Mass Communication cosponsors its annual South Florida Journalism Day for area schools and journalism advisers along with the Florida Scholastic Press Association.
