GENERAL, ORGANIC, AND BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY: AN INTEGRATED APROACH, 2nd  Edition by Kenneth W. Raymond, 2006, John Wiley & Sons, IncA simple calculator with a logarithm key is required for class and tests.

PRE-REQUISITES:

Second Year of High School Algebra or College Algebra

IMPORTANT:

This course does NOT satisfy the chemistry requirements for science majors.

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

This course is a special course designed for the nursing students. The course gives an overview of the foundations of inorganic chemistry including the periodic table and the general properties of the elements; organic chemistry includes naming of functional groups, their properties and reaction; and the study of biomolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.

 

COURSE OUTLINE

Chapters will be covered in order. Outline for the semester will be as follows:. Exam dates are given below and are considered FINAL: The final grade will be based on the average of three non-cumulative exams and you have to take all the exams. No make-up exams will be given

Chapter 4: An Introduction to Organic Chemistry

FIRST EXAM (Wednesday May 28th)

Chapter 4: An Introduction to Organic Chemistry

Chapter 5: Gases, Liquids, and Solids

Chapter 6: Reactions

SECOND EXAM (Wednesday July 9th)

Chapter 7: Solutions, Colloids, and Suspensions

Chapter 8: Lipids and Membranes

Chapter 9: Acids, Bases, and Equilibrium

Chapter 10: Carboxylic Acids, Phenols, ad Amines

Chapter 11: Alcohols, Ethers, Aldehydes, and Ketones

Chapter 12: Carbohydrates

Chapters 13 & 14: Peptides, Proteins, and Enzymes, Nucleic Acids

THIRD EXAM (Wednesday August 6th)

           

CLASS BEHAVIOR:

Class attendance is not mandatory but strongly recommended. There is a direct correlation between class attendance and class performance. If you choose to come to class, you will be expected to behave properly. Disruptions and side-conversations are not allowed. Absolutely no cell phones, iPods, laptops, or any other listening devices will be allowed to be used during the class.

ONLINE QUIZZES FOR EXTRA CREDIT

There will be computer quizzes given for extra credit and practice for each chapter. Visit https://edugen.wiley.com/edugen/secure/index.uni and login as a student. Students must complete and submit them promptly if you would like to receive extra credit for the class. Quizzes will only be available during specific limited times. Deadlines for the chapters will be announced as we move along, but all the material related to each exam must be completed before taking the exam to get any credits. You can attempt to answer the quizzes up to a maximum of three times. Once you access a quiz, it must be answered and submitted. This is an excellent way to practice for the format and style of exams that will be given.

 

EXAMS:  PICTURE ID IS REQUIRED TO TAKE THE EXAMS. Graphing calculators are not allowed during the exams

The format of the exams will be multiple-choice. There will be three (3) partial exams (100 points each)

Any missing exam will translate into a zero. The final grade will be based on the average of the three non-cumulative exams and you have to take all the exams. 

 

NO MAKE-UPS WILL BE GIVEN FOR ANY OF THE EXAMS.
