Texts
Corey,G. (2001). Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy. (6th Ed.). Belmont, CA: Wadsworth/Thompson.

The accompanying student handbook is not required but would be of great benefit to the student. It contains reviews of the material, exercises and sample test items.

Goals
This course will provide basic coverage of theories of personality in the psycho dynamic, humanistic, and learning traditions. Of particular interest are theoretical explanations of how "normal" and "abnormal" personalities develop. Theories will be critiqued and compared with special emphasis on intervention strategies designed to assist individuals in growth and development. Students will become familiar with the most prevalent theories of personality and their clinical applications.

Competencies
The student will be able to demonstrate the following competencies:

  1. Students will improve their knowledge of the basic facets of the major personality theories and acquire -- from the text and from their own reading-- an updated perspective of the theories.

  2. Students will expand their awareness of the treatment modalities suggested by the various theories and of current assessment of the efficacies of these modalities.

  3. Students will engage in a forum for exchange of information and ideas gained from reading the text
and from other selected sources including the
    Internet and videos.

  4. Students will express their learning experiences verbally and in written form through the examinations and in class discussions.

The following Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) competencies will be achieved in this course:

Standard 1: Professional Identity

Standard 2: Human Growth and Development

Standard 5: Helping Relationships

The following Florida Educators Accomplished Practices (FEAPs) competencies will be achieved in this course:
