Q: What exactly is Lambda Upsilon Lambda?
A: La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated was established on February 19, 1982 in order to address the shortcomings of academic institutions in meeting and addressing the needs of Latino and underrepresented students in higher education.

Q: What is LUL's purpose?
A: We seek to take a leadership role in meeting the needs of the Latino and underrepresented students in the community through cultural awareness, community service, and promotion of the Latino culture and people. We want to be able to bridge the gap between the “mainstream” aspects of college life and an individuals’ cultural pride, which can often be distorted.

Q: Is LUL a local organization?
A: We pride ourselves in being a national organization with chapters inclusive of 70 (and rising) of the most challenging universities in the country! Our network is at a National level and Hermanos are in contact with each other at all times. You are highly encouraged to explore our website (www.launidadlatina.org).

Q: So, you just accept Latinos?
A: No! We are looking for individuals with vision, determination, pride, and a commitment to accomplish the goals this organization has set for itself. Hermanos come from all backgrounds. La Unidad Latina was spearheaded by its commitment to the Latino community, but we find and seek further solidarity with other ethnic groups, both inside and outside of our membership. True justice can only be achieved when we advocate for everyone and when we include all those who share our vision and provide those individuals with the opportunity of our unique national organization’s resources, both human and capital, for the advancement of our principles.

Q: Do you Haze?
A: We do not physically abuse or degrade our Caballeros (pledges). On top of the college’s hazing guidelines, Lambda Upsilon Lambda has a very strict policy against hazing; we do not condone it. Although our intake process is very difficult and challenging, we do not believe brotherhood can be built upon a foundation of humiliation and degradation.

Q: Does Lambda Upsilon Lambda have a sister sorority?
A: No. Although we have strong historic ties to some organizations, we are not constitutionally or otherwise affiliated with any other organization.

Q: Why should I join LUL instead of other fraternities?
A: LUL is an organization that professionally promotes the goals and standards that it has set for itself. Our track record speaks for itself as recognized and awarded by our peers locally and nationally. We do not pride ourselves of merely being the first or the largest, we pride ourselves in being the best. Lambda Upsilon Lambda challenges individuals to think before making a decision. We don't tell men they belong with us, those who aspire to be LEADERS know where to find us.

Q: How long is the intake (pledge) process?
A: Our intake process is coordinated with all of our national chapters and it can last as long as the Caballeros (pledge) take to accomplish specific goals. One should perceive this process as a learning experience where individuals unify as Brothers and brothers emerge as Leaders.

Q: Will my academics suffer when I am in the fraternity?
A: No. Each chapter within this organization has a 4.0 scholastic program and mandates that each member of the chapter maintain a minimum grade point average to remain active in the chapter. Hermanos in various professions are available to help younger Hermanos in any subject that they may need assistance with. Members with the highest GPA are rewarded at the fraternity's Annual National Gala.

Q: What are the benefits or advantages of being in LUL?
A: As brothers, our responsibility is to make the most out of the organization. Our vast network ranges from chapters at all Ivy League institutions, to chapters across the nation. LUL's rich and elite Alumni are constantly assisting Undergraduates and recent Graduates all over the nation with advice, career development, financial assistance, etc. Along with the benefits of support, encouragement and friendships that last a lifetime, fraternity membership offers many practical benefits to its members. The LUL Foundation, a 501-c-3 organization offers scholarships to members who apply and are accepted.

Q: Who makes the best Lambda candidate?
A: An individual with character. Uniqueness is appreciated and welcomed because everybody benefits from it; you can learn from others as well as Hermanos can learn from you. Hermanos are focused individuals, committed to the goals of LUL, they are leaders in the community, they respect and embrace different cultures, they are open-minded and are diligent workers and scholars, and they have a solid moral foundation. Leaders have purposes while feeble minds have wishes.

Q: When/how did the Chapter start?
A: The Alpha Rho Chapter was founded in 2004 when 3 devoted gentlemen pledged and became the Founding brothers of LUL at Florida International University. After breaking ground in the state of Florida, Alpha Rho chapter has worked diligently to bring awareness of the fraternity’s goals which are to reinforce the importance of education, provide a positive image for our community, and bring minority issues to the forefront.
