TEXTBOOK and iClicker: Slonczewski + Foster, 2009. Microbiology An Evolving Science, 2nd Edition, W.W. Norton Pub. FIU Bookstore sells this at a high price (suggested retail is $183.50). From the publisher you can get the e-book (web-based $61.24 for 180 days; $122.49 downloaded to your computer; check with wwnorton.com for the details). You can get a good price on a used book on half.com or ebay or other Web booksellers.
iClickers: iClickers are for sale in the bookstore; and you can get used ones. Your iClicker needs to be registered, so make sure the iClicker ID number on the back of the instrument is readable, during the first week of class you will need to register your iClicker through the iClicker website. The results of iClicker use as well as your Exam grades will be transfered to the course's Blackboard site.
CLASS LECTURES: The lectures will include the use of i-Clickers in problem solving and lecture quiz questions (these are signfiicant, see grading below).
PLEASE use the Textbook's (Slonczewski and Foster,2009, Microbiology An Evolving Science) Web Site for practice exams (multiple choice and written) for each chapter. And, MOST IMPORTANTLY test your knowledge out with the book closed well before the Classes and Exams.
GRADING: 1. Exams: 5 Exams, 100 points each = 500 points.
2. iClicker answers in Class = 100 points.
Total Possible Points = 600 points.
PEER LEAD TEAM LEARNING: PLTL will be available for this class. PLTL is an enhanced was to learn just about any subject and has an intrinsic value in that. PLTL is graded and if you elect to participate in PLTL, your PLTL grade will be adjusted to at maximum add 30 points to your score (5% of total points possible increase).
MISSED CLASSES or EXAMS: missed classes or exams requuire a doctors note or other offical note explaining why you could not attend the class or exam. Make up exams will be given for valid noted situations. Make up classes (iClicker) will be done for valide noted situations in OE 246.
