PHY 5346
Fall 2011
Description of the Course
PHY 5346 is the first half of a graduate level course on classical
electromagnetic theory. It covers the topics of elementary methods in
electrostatics, methods for solving boundary value problems in electrostatics,
dielectric materials, magnetostatics and magnetic materials, Faraday's Law,
Maxwell's equations, and plane electromagnetic waves.

Grades
Grades will be based on the problem assignments and two exams. The best of the
two exams will count 45% of the total grade, the other exam 35% of the total
grade, and the homework 20% of the total grade.
Homework Assignments
Homework will consist of reading from the text and problem
assignments. It is generally advisable to carry out the reading
before the corresponding material is discussed in lecture. The problem
assignments can be downloaded and the due dates obtained on the
problem sets page. Late assignments will not be
accepted. While collaboration on homework assignments is allowed,
simply copying another student's solutions is not allowed and will
be considered cheating.
