(31) 2. ALBERTO, O.S.B. (?-1116)

Birth. (No date found), Piacenza.

Education. Entered the Order of Saint Benedict (Benedictines) in the monastery of S. Savino.

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon in a consistory celebrated ca. 1070; his deaconry is not known. He was legate to several places but they are not known. Named cardinal priest of S. Sabina in 1090. He is documented as cardinal priest for the first time in March 1091 at Montecassino. He participated in the council of Piacenza in March 1095; and accompanied Pope Urban II in France 1095-1096; they attended the Council of Tours in March 1096; the privileges of that metropolitan see were examined with great diligence. On August 6, 1098, he was in Salerno with Pope Urban II; he is mentioned as cardinal of S. Paolo in a document issued in the archiepiscopal palace of Salerno on that date, due to the fact that the title of S. Sabina was attached to the basilica of S. Paolo fuori le mura. He subscribed the papal bulls issued in Lateran on April 11 and 14, 1100.

Episcopate. He was appointed and consecrated archbishop of Siponto at the council of Melfi in October 1100; at the same time he resigned his cardinalatial title, which is explicitly confirmed in the text of the bull of Pope Paschal II, dated March 31, 1101: Albertus quoque nunc Sipontinus episcopus, huius autem actionis tempore transacto Romanae Ecclesiae cardinalis presbyter. He obtained from Pope Urban II confirmation of a benefice granted by Pope Benedict IX, by which the see of Vesti was made suffragan of the see of Siponto.

Death. January 12, 1116, Pavia. Buried (no information found).
