Birth. Ca. 1046. Of the noble family of the counts of Marsi. He is also listed as Leone Marsicano; as Leone d'Ostia; and as Leone Ostiense.

Education. Entered the Order of Saint Benedict (Benedictines) at Monte Cassino.

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found). Abbot Oderisio asked him to write a life of Abbot Desiderio, who became Pope Victor III; the work was much more comprehensive and became the Chronica monasterii Casinensis, which included events from the origin of the abbey to the year 1075.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal bishop of Velletri (or Ostia) in a consistory celebrated in 1105. Consecrated (no information found). Attended the Council of Guastalla in 1106. On February 12, 1111, he was at the St. Peter's basilica for the coronation of Emperor Henry V, when there was a tumult led by the prelates who had been degraded from the estate of princes of the empire; the indignation was the more intense, because the rights of the see of Rome had also been confiscated; after a three day riot, the emperor took the pope into captivity; the pope wrote several letters to him and to Cardinal Giovanni, bishop of Frascati. Attended the Synod of Letran in 1112, after the pontiff had been freed.

Early life. Called to Rome by Pope Alexander II. Named papal chaplain and apostolic subdeacon by Pope Gregory VII. Auditor of the Sacred Palace.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon of S. Maria in Via Lata in a consistory celebrated in 1105 (1). Participated in the papal election of 1118, in which Pope Gelasius II was elected. He favored the escape of the pope to Gaeta and Capua. He reestablished the order in Apullia. Legate before King Ruggiero II of Sicily. Returned to Rome and, with other cardinals, ratified the election of Pope Callistus II. Named chancellor of the Holy Roman Church by the new pope.
