Birth. (No date found), castle of La Châtre, Borgogne, France. Of a noble family. Nephew of Archbishop Pierre de la Châtre of Bourges. He is also listed as Aymery only; his last name as Castra; and his first name as Aimerich, Aimerici, Almerici, Armerici, Imerici, Ioserici, Haymericus, Aymeric and Aimerico.

Education. Joined the Canons Regular Lateranense.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon of S. Maria Nuova in a consistory of December 1120. Chancellor of the Holy Roman Church for 18 years at least; subscribed as such papal bulls issued between May 8, 1123 and November 24, 1124; February 3, 1125 and December 19, 1129; March 1140 and May 20, 1141. Participated in the papal election of 1124, in which Pope Honorius II was elected. On February 24, 1125, he replaced archchancellor Friedrich, archbishop of Cologne. Librarian of the Holy Roman Church from February 1125 until 1141. Participated in the papal election of 1130, in which Pope Innocent II was elected. Cardinal protodeacon in 1135. Bernard de Clairvaux, future saint, with whom he corresponded, dedicated to him his Amour de Dieu. In 1138, he was part of a papal legation formed by Gerardo Caccianemici dell'Orso, Can. Reg. of S. Maria di Reno, and Badouin, O.Cist., of S. Maria in Trastevere, supporting the pope in the dispute over the legitimacy of the election of Abbot Rainaldo and over the relations of the abbey with the papacy and the empire; Cardinal Aymery deposed the abbot for supporting Antipope Anacletus II.
