(1) Cristofori, Cronotasi dei cardinali di Santa Romana Chiesa, p. 11; "Essai de liste générale des cardinaux. Les cardinaux des 10 premiers siècles". Annuaire Pontifical Catholique 1926, p. 150, no. 1; and Gams, Series episcoporum Ecclesiae catholicae, p. IX, indicate that he was Bishop cardinalis of Silva Candida in 823 and died three years later in 826. Cardella, Memorie storiche de' cardinali della Santa Romana Chiesa, I, pt. 1, 42-43; and Chacón, Vitæ, et res gestæ Pontificum Romanorum : et S.R.E. Cardinalium, I, col. 578, include him among the cardinals created by Pope Leo III and say that it is believed that he was librarian and chancellor of the Holy Roman Church in the pontificate of that pope; that he accompanied the pope in his exile from Rome in France and Germany, protected by Emperor Charlemagne; that he participated in the Roman Council of 826 convoked by Pope Eugenius II; and that he was apostolic legate before Emperor Louis I the Pious, along with Nomenclatore Teodoro, Duke Sergio, Subdeacon Quirino, and Leone, maestro delle millizie, to defend the pope against the calumnies falsely raised against him, adding that the mission was successful.
