(1) There is doubt and confusion between the sources about him and Cardinal Walpert (876), created cardinal bishop of Porto by Pope John VIII in 876. Cristofori, Cronotasi dei cardinali di Santa Romana Chiesa, p. 9, lists Cardinal Valperto as bishop of Porto from 876 until 883; then Valentino in 883, succeeded in that same year by Formoso (iterum), again. "Essai de liste générale des cardinaux. es cardinaux des 10 premiers siècles". Annuaire Pontifical Catholique 1926, p. 154, no. 4, refers his entry to that of Cardinal Walpert or Gualpert, under Pope John VIII. Pius Bonifatius Gams, Series episcoporum Ecclesiae catholicae (3 v. in 1. Graz : Akademische Druck- u. Verlagsanstalt, 1957), p. VIII, lists him as Walpertus, Valentinus (876-883). Regesta pontificum Romanorum ab conditio Ecclesia. Ad annum post Christum natum MCXCVIII, I, 425, after his name, Valentini, adds (lege: Walperti).
