Yu Yu Hakusho

Fourteen-year-old Yusuke Urameshi has a reputation as a delinquent - he curses, cuts school and fights on a regular basis. His twenty nine-year-old hard drinking mother spends most of her time lounging in front of the television. But Yusuke has a good heart and the support of his childhood friend Keiko and his school's principle. Yusuke's good heart propels him to push a toddler from the path of a speeding truck at the cost of his own life. Botan, a very perky messenger of death comes from the underworld to break some bad news. Yusuke was not supposed to die at all, in fact without his intervention the toddler would have miraculously survived without even the bruises he received in Yusuke's rescue

Botan offers Yusuke a chance to come back to life, but he must work for the underworld as a spirit detective, guarding humans from demons escaping from the demon world. Joined by his high school rival, Kuwabara and two demons, Hiei and Kurama, Yusuke fights a variety of demons each episode.

Fighting anime are very popular in Japan and in the US and Yu Yu Hakusho is one of the most entertaining. Yusuke and the rest of his team are all appealing characters and the series offers a good balance of humor and action and fun parody of Japanese mythology. The series is offered in edited and unedited versions - the edited version cleans up some of the violence and language.
