Welcome to the Anime Librarian! The AL is a resource for people interested in bringing Japanese animation, or anime, into their library collections and programs. Hopefully, there will be something of interest for people outside the library, too. For those new to the topic, About Anime in the Features section provides an introduction to this rich and surprising medium. Features also includes The View From the Stacks, a series of essays on various apsects of anime, and a Bibliography of articles and books. The Reviews offer evaluations of movies, television series, and Original Animation on Video (OAV). Core Collections provides core lists to help start or develop an anime collection. Anime offers some fascinating program and activity possibilities for adults as well as children, so check the Activities section for ideas. The Glossary defines some of the more commonly encountered terms and names. The number of anime web sites are staggering, so the Links section lists some of the most useful to get you started. Finally, there is a little about the creators of this website in the section, Contact Us. Anime has seen a phenomenol growth in the United States over the last decade, but it is still something of a mystery to most Americans. Often mistaken as a genre, or thought to be a temporary craze like Pokemon, anime is actually a vibrant art form that forms an integralpart of Japanese culture. The increasing popularity of Japanese animation overseas is due not to it's novelty, but rather its inherent worth as art and entertainment. We hope the Anime Librarian will provide a window into this thrilling, delightful, and amazing world. At the very least, it may help explain to friends, family, and colleagues why the two of us have been so utterly captivated by a bunch of cartoons.
