Dr. Arlene K. Brown

Dr. Brown earned a Ph.D. in Social Welfare and an M.S.W. from Florida International University and has over twenty years work experience with public social service work with an emphasis on special needs adoption and foster care.  Dr. Brown serves as the MSW Coordinator of the Broward Campus.  She also serves as a Field Practicum Coordinator and Instructor.  Dr. Brown recruits coordinates and monitors field placements for social work students and teaches various graduate and undergraduate courses.  She also teaches a Field Instructor’s training which was developed by the Florida Field Instructors Consortium.  Previous to joining the faculty of FIU, Dr. Brown served as the Chief Administrator for all child welfare services in Broward County, administering, supervising and formulating policy for a number of child welfare and juvenile justice programs and supervising a staff of 320 employees and a budget in excess of $40 million.

Dr. Brown teaches the MSW Integrative Field Seminars and Field Practicum.  She has also taught Micro and Macro Practice and Ethics at the Masters level.  At the undergraduate level she has taught Policy and Research.  Her areas of interest include child welfare, children’s mental health, and program evaluation.

A tireless advocate on behalf of families and children, Dr. Brown was the primary author of a book chapter entitled “Benefits and Effects of a Title IV-E Funded MSW Program” which was published by the Council on Social Work Education in Expanding Partnerships for Vulnerable Children, Youth and Families.  Dr. Brown serves on a statewide task force to enhance social work education in relation to public service employment.
