Crosstabulations from tables SPSS under Windows for MM 9.28, p. 620

 

1.Click on SPSS icon.

 

2. SPSS will put you into a NEW DATA screen. In order to enter words for variables, click on the VARIABLE VIEW tab at the bottom of the screen.
Type in three Variable names (8 characters if you have SPSS 12 or earlier),

 

Gender        and under Value Labels  1 female   ADD                  2 male   OK

Pet_status   and under Value Labels  1 Non -Pet Owners ADD   2 Dog Owners  ADD   3 Cat Owners  OK  

Count.

 

3. Click on the DATA VIEW tab at the bottom of the screen. Type in the data under the variable names –

gender pet_status count

1              2         157

1              3           85

2              1         915

2              2         171

2              3           82

 

4. Choose FILE / SAVE AS and save the data MM9_28.sav.

 

5. To create the table you must first weight the data since you did not put in the raw data.

    So choose DATA / WEIGHT CASES and choose weight cases by "count", your variable name.

 

6. Then to create the table, choose ANALYZE / DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS  / CROSSTABS and choose "gender" for the row variable and "pet_status" as the column variable, or vice versa. Choose CELLS inside this box and check COUNTS – observed, expected and PERCENTAGE - row, column and total. Then choose OK.

 

7. The table results will appear in the Viewer Window. You can save this file with FILE / SAVE AS to mm9_28.spo if you want to keep it.
    Or export and save as an htm or doc file so you can read  it later.

 

8. Print from FILE/PRINT and interpret!
