Job Shadowing in the Division of Student Affairs
The Student Affairs Staff Development committee has started organizing office and job shadowing opportunities for Division staff who are interested in better understanding another Student Affairs office or position, either because they want to learn a skill, or because they want to learn more about another office, particularly one with which the collaborate. The job shadowing will allow you to develop one or more professional competency areas. You can decide if you would like to visit an office to observe part of a regular workday, to sit in on regular meeting, to assist that office with an event, or some other activity. To participate in the job shadowing program, identify the specific competency area(s) which you hope to develop as a result of the shadowing experience, discuss your interest with your supervisor and get their approval, then complete the online application form (available here). A Staff Development Committee representative will get back to you about your application. .

The Student Programming Council at Biscayne Bay Campus Receive Awards
The Student Programming Council at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus received several awards at the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities national conference held recently in Atlanta, Georgia. The group received the Programming Event of the Year Award for the October 2010 Step Show; SPC also received first place for the banner competition and second place for the printed material graphics competition. SPC BBC was also featured in the February 2011 edition of Campus Activities Magazine.

International Student Night Hosted by FIU Athletics in Collaboration with ISSS
FIU Athletics honored international student athletes at the FIU women’s basketball game against Middle Tennessee State on February 24 in the U.S. Century Bank Arena. ISSS Sends 10 Students to the Florida International Leadership Conference
On the weekend of February 5-7, four students from the Biscayne Bay Campus and six students from the Modesto Maidique Campus attended the 4th annual Florida International Leadership Conference at a camp near Ocala, Florida. Recreation Services Events
This past month, architects from RDG Sports visited FIU to conduct a planning study for the future expansion of the MMC Recreation Center. The three day exercise used input from students, Facilities Management and Recreation Services, coupled with RDG’s expertise, to create a vision of what the expansion should include to meet future needs. Civility Initiative Holds Kickoff Event
The Civility Initiative hosted a kickoff event at the FIU Men’s Basketball Game on February 18. The game against FIU’s rival FAU focused on civility and sportsmanship. Four hundred students signed a Civility Pledge Card as they entered the stadium, committing to upholding respect, integrity and community at FIU. [ MORE ]

MLK Commemoration Events a Success
The 2010 celebration of the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at FIU commenced on January 12th with the MLK Movie Night, followed by the MLK Awards and Speaker’s Reception on January 14th, the Breakfast on January 15th, MLK Day of Service on January 16, MLK Dinner on January 19th, and the MLK Youth Forum on January 20th. This year’s theme was “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of the Dream.” [ MORE ]

During the week of November 2nd, higher education institutions in South Florida will be hosting a group of overseas educational advisers. The participants are selected from overseas advising centers in the EducationUSA Network affiliated with the U.S. Department of State. [ MORE ]

Celebrating International Education Week
FIU will be participating this month in the national effort to celebrate International Education Week (from November 16 to November 20). International Education Week (IEW) has been designated by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education as a time to highlight the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide and to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment. The Summer of Service 2009 has organized by Service for Peace in partnership with The Center for Leadership & Service. The project took place June 13-22, 2009, consisting of ten days of service-learning activities to rejuvenate and develop the community of Little Haiti, Miami specifically the Yvonne Learning Center (YLC), a private not-for-profit school K -12. Higher Education Graduate Students Participate in Annual Exchange in Ohio

Orientation Sessions for New Students Begin

Recreation Director Honored for Service
Rob Frye, Recreation Services Director, received the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Regional Award of Merit at the 60th Annual NIRSA Conference and Expo held in Charlotte, North Carolina on April 6. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to NIRSA's Region II, made up of the southeastern U.S. and the Caribbean. Rob's most recent contribution to the Association was serving as the faculty chair for the NIRSA School of Recreational Sports Management.
